This series documents Adams' graduate school level educational journey. Much of the series is comprised of correspondence. Correspondence dated from 1963 to 1969 is related to program transfers, teaching and research assistantships, and employment. The correspondence from 1969 to 1973 pertains to job searches and travel for dissertation research, completion of primary doctoral coursework and exams, and dissertation related correspondence. The series also includes correspondence between Adams and Virigina Rice. Rice was Adams' supervisor in the Social Science Division of the University of Arizona library during his time there.

This series documents Adams’ career with the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) from 1973 to 1983. AASLH is the national professional organization for state and local historical agencies and historical-agency personnel. It provides annual conferences, publications, and other forms of information as well as training and advocacy for historical societies, archives, and museums and the professionals and volunteers who work in them.

This series documents Adams’ directorship of the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society (BECHS), now known as the Buffalo History Museum, from 1984 to 1985. It includes information about his selection for the position, historical background information about the society, administrative documents, correspondence, budgetary information, reports, newsletters, scrapbooks, and photographs.

This series documents Adams’ tenure as director of the Louisiana State Museum (LSM) and assistant secretary for the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism (DCRT) in 1986 and 1987. The museum included multiple buildings in the French Quarter in New Orleans, the Old State Capitol in Baton Rouge, and an exhibits facility in Shreveport. Included here are administrative files, board minutes, correspondence, budget and facilities information, programs, media coverage, and material about five support group relationships and activities.
